March 21st, 2011

The Greenbrier Sporting Club Fly Fishing School is open to anglers of all abilities. Anglers of all skill levels will learn the tactics and techniques to be successful fishermen. New fly fishers will learn the basic skills required to get out and start catching fish while we will work on more advanced techniques and more specialized casting for experienced anglers.
What to expect:
The weather in April can be variable. Bring rain gear and additional layers. We will fish rain or shine. Please do not wear cotton clothing. Nylon and fleece dry quicker and will keep you warmer if you should get wet.
Fishing gear:
If you have your own, bring it! You will get the most out of the school if you learn on your personal equipment. If you don’t have any gear, don’t worry there will be plenty of Sage fly rods, Tibor and Bauer Reels and Rio lines to use plus our fully stocked fly shop has all the equipment you could need. We will have hip boots available for those who don’t have waders.
Instruction:
We will begin the weekend with some classroom work, it’s a necessary evil but we keep the sessions short and to the point. In the classroom we work on knots and rigging, fly tying, gear selections, and equipment. The main focus of our instruction will be on fly casting. We will ensure everyone leaves the school a better fly caster. We also spend time in the stream learning about the ecology of trout and their environment.
The Fishing:
April is traditionally our best month of the year to trout fish. Expect to see good hatches and some dry fly fishing opportunities and expect the nymph and streamer bite to excellent as well. We will spend the entire second day fishing. Plan to be on the water about eight hours. We will be wading all day so wear comfortable clothes and dress for the weather. Your guide will spend the day helping you catch fish and reinforcing what we learned on the casting pond and in the classroom the day before.
The school is open to everyone, members, guests, friends, and children over 12 years old. Please RSVP with either the GSC concierge or Jacob by April 6th.
