The Greenbrier Sporting Club announced today that real estate sales at America’s Resort have seen their best year since 2007. The private residential enclave, located at The Greenbrier, sold nearly $34 million in real estate in 2011, consisting of 20 homes and 21 home sites. This buying streak, witnessed by the Sporting Club, has increased every year since Jim Justice purchased both the resort and the real estate development in 2009. “Despite worldwide turmoil and weak economies, The Greenbrier Sporting Club had a banner sales year. We exceeded our budgeted goal by 36%,” said John Klemish, principal and broker in charge at The Greenbrier Sporting Club. “I am very proud of the entire Greenbrier Sporting Club team and am looking forward to an even better 2012.”

The vigorous home and land sales are not the only area setting records at the Sporting Club. Home construction has never once halted at the resort. In fact, there are currently six homes nearing completion, with another eight in review by the community’s Architectural Review Board. Many of the homes being built are nestled in the Sporting Club’s unique mountaintop neighborhoods, The Ridges and Summit Village, which afford expansive vistas of the Alleghenies and the Greenbrier Valley. By the end of 2012 the resort will have surpassed 200 homes completed in The Greenbrier Sporting Club community.

“My dream is beginning to come true. I wanted the world to see the magic of the West Virginia mountains and The Greenbrier. It’s happening. Property values are beginning to rise, the excitement of the PGA TOUR FedExCup golf tournament, the concerts, the elegant one-of-a-kind casino, and now the new medical complex have surely generated massive energy. Along with all this, the rediscovery of The Greenbrier as the perfect place for families makes the houses and properties of The Sporting Club at The Greenbrier a must in your portfolio,” said Jim Justice, chairman and owner of The Greenbrier and The Greenbrier Sporting Club.

The Greenbrier County Convention & Visitors Bureau unveiled a brand new promotional video this morning highlighting different aspects of The Greenbrier Valley—from leisure and adventure activities, to fairs and festivals. The video, comprised of 5 different sections, each of which can stand alone, is nearly twelve minutes long and was produced and filmed by Russell Williams and Annamarie Visclosky of Complete Pictures. (To view Russell’s recent work with The Greenbrier Sporting Club, view our collection of resale home videos on The Sporting Club’s channel by clicking here.) The middle section of the video features The Greenbrier and highlights the resort’s stunning interiors along with an interview with historian Dr. Bob Conte. In fact, Russell and Annamarie teamed up with nearly 200 residents in the Greenbrier Valley to provide all of the acting, voiceover work, and music in the video. The project took months to complete in order to capture all of the events and festivals throughout the year and features over 120 locations in the area. The video in its entirety is featured below:

Last Weekend, Santa and some carolers, along with Jeff Kmiec, Carleton Varney and Brinsley Matthews, ushered in the holiday season with the lighting of this year’s Christmas tree. The annual tree lighting ceremony drew hundreds to the main entrance, where Santa Claus himself arrived on a horse-drawn sleigh. The Greenbrier Entertainers provided classic Christmas carols for the crowd as they waited for Santa to arrive. Once he did, the massive Greenbrier County Christmas Tree lit up the entire front lawn, bathing the main entrance in a majestic purple for the season. The weekend also played host to holiday shopping, trunk shows, book signings and much more!

One of the top players on the PGA TOUR and one of the hottest musical groups will make the 2011 Greenbrier Classic even bigger and better than the inaugural event. Phil Mickelson, three-time Masters champion and winner of 39 PGA TOUR events, has committed to play in the July 25-31 event on the resort’s Old White TPC course. Adding to the excitement, The Black Eyed Peas, six-time Grammy Award winning artists and global superstars, will perform on Friday, July 29.

“Phil is one of the best players in the world and having him compete will be just fantastic. And The Black Eyed Peas just played for this year’s Super Bowl. How much better can it get?” said Jim Justice, at a press conference today where he was joined by Sergio Garcia to make the announcements.

A future Hall of Famer, Mickelson is the highest ranked American in the world with career earnings over $61 million. He is currently ranked 4th in both the World Golf Rankings and in FedExCup points. Over the past five years, Mickelson has distinguished himself as the best player at the Masters. With an average round of 70.40, Mickelson has finished second or third in four of the last five Masters. He is consistently one of the top players to watch and is one of the most popular players on the TOUR.

“My family and I are really excited about coming to The Greenbrier this summer. My kids are already making lists of all the things they want to do while we’re there, even though I’ll be working,” said Mickelson. “I heard a lot of great comments about last year’s event, so I’m really looking forward to playing and relaxing with my family. Of course, the only bunker I want to see is the one they built for Congress during the Cold War.”

The Classic has also received an early commitment from Camilo Villegas, a three-time winner on the PGA TOUR and a fan favorite around the world. The 29-year-old Colombian’s charisma and aggressive style of play made him an instant sensation when he joined the PGA TOUR in 2006, along with his signature “Spiderman crouch” on the greens when reading putts.

The 2011 Classic Concert series will now feature three incredible performances at the State Fairgrounds amphitheater. Tim McGraw and Luke Bryan perform on Thursday, The Black Eyed Peas take the stage Friday and Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert close the series on Saturday. Tickets to all three concerts, the three practice rounds and four tournament rounds are available for $159. A weekly grounds badge and ticket to the Thursday or Saturday concert is now available for $89 while a weekly grounds badge and ticket to the Friday concert with The Black Eyed Peas is $109. Benefactor, alumni and clubhouse badges, which include upgraded access to the golf tournament as well as tickets to all three concerts are also available. All badge levels are available for purchase at www.greenbrierclassic.com, Ticketmaster and participating United Bank and Kroger locations.
Lewisburg, W.Va., the historic and hip town of 3,500 people just down the road from The Greenbrier, garnered over 140,000 votes on its way to being crowned “The Coolest Small Town in America” by Budget Travel magazine over the past three months. With numerous restaurants, shops, parks and nightlife options, Lewisburg has long been considered the “Jewel of West Virginia,” and now the community is reveling in their newfound distinction.

West Virginia natives and film stars Jennifer Garner (Alias, Daredevil) and Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me, 30 Days) got in on the game by tweeting for their fans to go vote, and newly elected West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin even filmed a short television spot from his offices in D.C. While Astoria, Ore. tried their best to pull ahead, Lewisburg rallied through social networking and public events to ultimately obtain more votes than any other town in the contest’s history.

With the wind at its back, Lewisburg looks forward to hosting its annual Chocolate Festival on April 9th. As always, the town also celebrates the first Friday of every month with extended hours, live music in the green space and complimentary hors’ d’oevres and drinks in many of the boutiques and shops.

West Virginia native and Greenbrier Sporting Club member Jerry West was honored with a bronze statue at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, one of only five existing statues at the famed arena and home of the Los Angeles Lakers. West was honored by guests that included NBA greats such as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Bill Russell, Pat Riley, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak, owner Dr. Jerry Buss and NBA commissioner David Stern. Ever the humble hero, West told the audience, “When I look around, some of the people I’ve been around as athletes, some of the ones I’ve competed against, I really want to thank you for coming tonight. Frankly, it’s more meaningful than perhaps this statue.”

West, who opened Prime 44 West steakhouse at The Greenbrier resort two years ago, reminisced about his years as a young boy growing up in West Virginia with dreams of playing in the NBA. West, who grew up in Chelyan, West Virginia, will have an autobiography out later this year. A video of the ceremony can be viewed below:
