The Greenbrier Sporting Club announced today that real estate sales at America’s Resort have seen their best year since 2007. The private residential enclave, located at The Greenbrier, sold nearly $34 million in real estate in 2011, consisting of 20 homes and 21 home sites. This buying streak, witnessed by the Sporting Club, has increased every year since Jim Justice purchased both the resort and the real estate development in 2009. “Despite worldwide turmoil and weak economies, The Greenbrier Sporting Club had a banner sales year. We exceeded our budgeted goal by 36%,” said John Klemish, principal and broker in charge at The Greenbrier Sporting Club. “I am very proud of the entire Greenbrier Sporting Club team and am looking forward to an even better 2012.”

The vigorous home and land sales are not the only area setting records at the Sporting Club. Home construction has never once halted at the resort. In fact, there are currently six homes nearing completion, with another eight in review by the community’s Architectural Review Board. Many of the homes being built are nestled in the Sporting Club’s unique mountaintop neighborhoods, The Ridges and Summit Village, which afford expansive vistas of the Alleghenies and the Greenbrier Valley. By the end of 2012 the resort will have surpassed 200 homes completed in The Greenbrier Sporting Club community.

“My dream is beginning to come true. I wanted the world to see the magic of the West Virginia mountains and The Greenbrier. It’s happening. Property values are beginning to rise, the excitement of the PGA TOUR FedExCup golf tournament, the concerts, the elegant one-of-a-kind casino, and now the new medical complex have surely generated massive energy. Along with all this, the rediscovery of The Greenbrier as the perfect place for families makes the houses and properties of The Sporting Club at The Greenbrier a must in your portfolio,” said Jim Justice, chairman and owner of The Greenbrier and The Greenbrier Sporting Club.

The Greenbrier Sporting Club recently participated in the GolfWeek Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Private Clubs from all over the country were invited to compete in this prestigious event. Representing The Greenbrier Sporting Club were members: Ed Robinson, Paul Moran, Frank Ebert along with Golf Professional, Robbie Gilmore. Superb weather was experienced on the Monterey Peninsula for 5 consecutive days of golf. The event was conducted over the famed, Pebble Beach Golf Club, Spyglass Hill, and the Spanish Bay Club. The team was in the heat of battle throughout the tournament and ended up finishing in third place among twenty teams. A distinct highlight of the competition was Ed Robinson’s birdie two on # 7 at Pebble Beach BOTH times he played the hole. Perhaps they will erect a monument there in his honor. The ladies accompanying the players enjoyed a great time as well. Their favorite adventures included a shopping spree of the delightful boutiques in Carmel and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. There has already been discussion of how to best our third place finish next year!

The Greenbrier County Convention & Visitors Bureau unveiled a brand new promotional video this morning highlighting different aspects of The Greenbrier Valley—from leisure and adventure activities, to fairs and festivals. The video, comprised of 5 different sections, each of which can stand alone, is nearly twelve minutes long and was produced and filmed by Russell Williams and Annamarie Visclosky of Complete Pictures. (To view Russell’s recent work with The Greenbrier Sporting Club, view our collection of resale home videos on The Sporting Club’s channel by clicking here.) The middle section of the video features The Greenbrier and highlights the resort’s stunning interiors along with an interview with historian Dr. Bob Conte. In fact, Russell and Annamarie teamed up with nearly 200 residents in the Greenbrier Valley to provide all of the acting, voiceover work, and music in the video. The project took months to complete in order to capture all of the events and festivals throughout the year and features over 120 locations in the area. The video in its entirety is featured below:

Last Weekend, Santa and some carolers, along with Jeff Kmiec, Carleton Varney and Brinsley Matthews, ushered in the holiday season with the lighting of this year’s Christmas tree. The annual tree lighting ceremony drew hundreds to the main entrance, where Santa Claus himself arrived on a horse-drawn sleigh. The Greenbrier Entertainers provided classic Christmas carols for the crowd as they waited for Santa to arrive. Once he did, the massive Greenbrier County Christmas Tree lit up the entire front lawn, bathing the main entrance in a majestic purple for the season. The weekend also played host to holiday shopping, trunk shows, book signings and much more!

The Greenbrier Sporting Club has announced the construction of three new homes on The Summit, featuring the fine craftsmanship and attention to detail Sporting Club builders and architects are known for. These homes will embody the rustic elegance of The Summit and Greenbrier Mountain property. Using regional materials and local artisans, the architectural design of these homes will follow the vernacular tradition of The Greenbrier’s mountain estates. Drystacked, indigenous stone fireplaces and wide plank vertical siding, coupled with modern interiors designed for tomorrow’s homeowner, will create one-of-a-kind, unique homes for today’s luxury mountain home owner who’s looking for stunning vistas with 50+ mile views across the verdant landscape of the Allegheny mountains.

Madison Spencer Architects, of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Newport, Rhode Island, is the architectural firm undertaking the design for a mountain estate located on lot 30 in The Greenbrier Summit Village. “Proportion, balance, and a sound knowledge of craft and materials – these fundamental notions of the building arts guide us in all that we accomplish,” notes Spencer, who lectures on architecture around the country and has practiced all over the world. “The Greenbrier Sporting Club presents a unique melding of the world-class luxury of the “Old White” with a unique opportunity to own a residence within some of the most beautiful land east of the Mississippi. It can’t get any better than this.”

“Jim Justice and John Klemish have charged us with defining anew the character that sets the Greenbrier apart. There was nothing cookie cutter about the Greenbrier throughout its history and this new Justice era marks a bold reaffirmation of that. Through a collaboration with some of the biggest names in home decorating and detailing that we have worked with over the years, we are bringing to the fore a residence that sensitively rides that summit ridge. It draws upon a highly crafted country house tradition with seamlessly integrated technologies. I am thrilled to accept Jim and John’s challenge on this.”

Pinnacle Group, Inc. a longtime builder at The Greenbrier Sporting Club was chosen as the general contractor for the project. “Undeniably the finest property to be developed at The Greenbrier Sporting Club,” says Tony Mamone, President of Pinnacle Group, Inc., “and quite possibly the most panoramic view corridor in the Allegheny Mountains. The family fortunate enough to purchase this property will acquire a piece of ‘Greenbrier History.’”

These homes will also enjoy close proximity to The Summit lodge and restaurant, along with the Activities Barn, mountaintop infinity pool and new equestrian center with mountain trail rides.

John Klemish, Broker in Charge and Advisor to the President, says that building these homes at The Summit will not only spur on more building on the summit but also add inventory to our depleted resale home list. “To live at the apex of Greenbrier mountain is to live in an incredible aerie with views that extend for miles and miles. The microclimate at the summit is cooler and many times above the cloud line and to witness the sun or moon climbing the sky is indeed a magnificent sight to behold.”
On a beautiful afternoon in the Allegheny Mountains this past summer, Jim Justice, Chairman and CEO of The Greenbrier Hotel Corporation, announced the development of a forward-thinking medical initiative, along with world-renowned physicians Dr. James Andrews, Michael Immel and lauded healthcare developer Jack T. Diamond.

For Justice, who bought the 6,500-acre resort in 2009, the decision was practical and emotional. “Over 200 years ago, people came here to improve their health; soaking in the sulphur water, using hollowed-out trees for bathtubs. That’s how The Greenbrier was born,” said Justice. “Now, we are redefining healthcare with the expertise of these highly regarded professionals, a state-of-the-art medical facility and forum for research and education. And we are doing it right here in West Virginia. How exciting is that?”

While the institute will be built in phases, the initial stages are estimated at $250 million. Phase I will include five buildings: a relocated and expanded executive health Greenbrier Clinic, a Jim Andrews sports medicine center, a cosmetic surgery and lifestyle enhancement academy, a sports performance and training facility and a boutique hotel with 20 VIP suites.

Greenbrier Medical Institute Rendering

The concept for this cutting-edge endeavor was developed by Andrews and Diamond, who envisioned a world-class medical complex which would revolutionize healthcare. In addition, Dr. E. Gaylon McCollough, an internationally recognized surgeon and teacher in the cosmetic surgery field, has joined the team. Their goal was to establish a medical mecca with numerous components including sports performance, wellness, research, product development, education, cosmetic surgery, preventive care and other specialties. At the same time, they wanted a place that would attract the best physicians and healthcare professionals in the world, in turn creating a think tank of global proportions. Throughout their discussions, locations such as London, England, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Brasilia, Brazil and Seoul, South Korea were considered. However, once the idea was presented to Justice, the concept became a reality with its home to be White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Greenbrier Medical Institute Rendering

The Greenbrier Medical Institute complex, designed by architect Willie Stokes, will feature classic Georgian architecture similar to the resort’s façade. A replica of the Springhouse, the site of the property’s sulphur springs, will be incorporated into the facility. The Institute will include guest suites for patients and their families. Diamond and his partner Mark E. Krohn are leading the development of this extensive project.
