Greenbrier County CVB Unveils New Tourism Video

The Greenbrier County Convention & Visitors Bureau unveiled a brand new promotional video this morning highlighting different aspects of The Greenbrier Valley—from leisure and adventure activities, to fairs and festivals. The video, comprised of 5 different sections, each of which can stand alone, is nearly twelve minutes long and was produced and filmed by Russell Williams and Annamarie Visclosky of Complete Pictures. The middle section of the video features The Greenbrier and highlights the resort’s stunning interiors along with an interview with historian Dr. Bob Conte. In fact, Russell and Annamarie teamed up with nearly 200 residents in the Greenbrier Valley to provide all of the acting, voiceover work, and music in the video. The project took months to complete in order to capture all of the events and festivals throughout the year and features over 120 locations in the area. The video in its entirety is featured below:

Greenbrier Christmas Tree Lighting Draws a Large Crowd

Last Weekend, Santa and some carolers, along with Jeff Kmiec, Carleton Varney and Brinsley Matthews, ushered in the holiday season with the lighting of this year’s Christmas tree. The annual tree lighting ceremony drew hundreds to the main entrance, where Santa Claus himself arrived on a horse-drawn sleigh. The Greenbrier Entertainers provided classic Christmas carols for the crowd as they waited for Santa to arrive. Once he did, the massive Greenbrier County Christmas Tree lit up the entire front lawn, bathing the main entrance in a majestic purple for the season. The weekend also played host to holiday shopping, trunk shows, book signings and much more!

Justice Announces Greenbrier Medical Institute

On a beautiful afternoon in the Allegheny Mountains this past summer, Jim Justice, Chairman and CEO of The Greenbrier Hotel Corporation, announced the development of a forward-thinking medical initiative, along with world-renowned physicians Dr. James Andrews, Michael Immel and lauded healthcare developer Jack T. Diamond.

For Justice, who bought the 6,500-acre resort in 2009, the decision was practical and emotional. “Over 200 years ago, people came here to improve their health; soaking in the sulphur water, using hollowed-out trees for bathtubs. That’s how The Greenbrier was born,” said Justice. “Now, we are redefining healthcare with the expertise of these highly regarded professionals, a state-of-the-art medical facility and forum for research and education. And we are doing it right here in West Virginia. How exciting is that?”

While the institute will be built in phases, the initial stages are estimated at $250 million. Phase I will include five buildings: a relocated and expanded executive health Greenbrier Clinic, a Jim Andrews sports medicine center, a cosmetic surgery and lifestyle enhancement academy, a sports performance and training facility and a boutique hotel with 20 VIP suites.

The concept for this cutting-edge endeavor was developed by Andrews and Diamond, who envisioned a world-class medical complex which would revolutionize healthcare. In addition, Dr. E. Gaylon McCollough, an internationally recognized surgeon and teacher in the cosmetic surgery field, has joined the team. Their goal was to establish a medical mecca with numerous components including sports performance, wellness, research, product development, education, cosmetic surgery, preventive care and other specialties. At the same time, they wanted a place that would attract the best physicians and healthcare professionals in the world, in turn creating a think tank of global proportions. Throughout their discussions, locations such as London, England, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Brasilia, Brazil and Seoul, South Korea were considered. However, once the idea was presented to Justice, the concept became a reality with its home to be White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

The Greenbrier Medical Institute complex, designed by architect Willie Stokes, will feature classic Georgian architecture similar to the resort’s façade. A replica of the Springhouse, the site of the property’s sulphur springs, will be incorporated into the facility. The Institute will include guest suites for patients and their families. Diamond and his partner Mark E. Krohn are leading the development of this extensive project.

Independence Day Weekend Highlights

With July 4th weekend just four weeks away, families across the country are gearing up for another year of BBQs, fireworks and outdoor fun. July 4th is always a big weekend at The Sporting Club, and this year proves no different. With the holiday falling on a Monday this year, the festivities extend from Friday July 1st all the way to Tuesday July 5th. Numerous outdoor sports and adventure activities highlight a weekend full of music, food and fun for the entire family. The big shindig for the weekend is the Annual July 4th Picnic at the Members’ Lodge, from 5-8pm. Live music by Beth Patterson, stilt walkers, kids’ activities, leisure games on the spa lawn and a Rubber Ducky Race on Howard’s Creek, capped off with a massive firework display at The Greenbrier, will all make for an unforgettable weekend.

GSC Gets Ready for a Huge Memorial Day Weekend

The day once known as Decoration Day not only marks a day of remembrance for our country’s fallen soldiers, but also the unofficial beginning of the summer season. It’s the weekend when pools across the region finally open their gates and picnic baskets are brought out of storage. This year at The Greenbrier Sporting Club, Memorial Day activities will include a bevy of outdoor pursuits, group workouts, dedicated children activities, and sports. However, it will also include the club’s annual Community Association Meeting on Saturday the 28th, and later that day, there will be a tour of Pam West’s Farm, where many of the “Farm to Table” ingredients at GSC’s restaurants are grown.

Phil Mickelson and The Black Eyed Peas Announced for The Greenbrier Classic

One of the top players on the PGA TOUR and one of the hottest musical groups will make the 2011 Greenbrier Classic even bigger and better than the inaugural event. Phil Mickelson, three-time Masters champion and winner of 39 PGA TOUR events, has committed to play in the July 25-31 event on the resort’s Old White TPC course. Adding to the excitement, The Black Eyed Peas, six-time Grammy Award winning artists and global superstars, will perform on Friday, July 29.

“Phil is one of the best players in the world and having him compete will be just fantastic. And The Black Eyed Peas just played for this year’s Super Bowl. How much better can it get?” said Jim Justice, at a press conference today where he was joined by Sergio Garcia to make the announcements.

A future Hall of Famer, Mickelson is the highest ranked American in the world with career earnings over $61 million. He is currently ranked 4th in both the World Golf Rankings and in FedExCup points. Over the past five years, Mickelson has distinguished himself as the best player at the Masters. With an average round of 70.40, Mickelson has finished second or third in four of the last five Masters. He is consistently one of the top players to watch and is one of the most popular players on the TOUR.

“My family and I are really excited about coming to The Greenbrier this summer. My kids are already making lists of all the things they want to do while we’re there, even though I’ll be working,” said Mickelson. “I heard a lot of great comments about last year’s event, so I’m really looking forward to playing and relaxing with my family. Of course, the only bunker I want to see is the one they built for Congress during the Cold War.”

The Classic has also received an early commitment from Camilo Villegas, a three-time winner on the PGA TOUR and a fan favorite around the world. The 29-year-old Colombian’s charisma and aggressive style of play made him an instant sensation when he joined the PGA TOUR in 2006, along with his signature “Spiderman crouch” on the greens when reading putts.

The 2011 Classic Concert series will now feature three incredible performances at the State Fairgrounds amphitheater. Tim McGraw and Luke Bryan perform on Thursday, The Black Eyed Peas take the stage Friday and Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert close the series on Saturday. Tickets to all three concerts, the three practice rounds and four tournament rounds are available for $159. A weekly grounds badge and ticket to the Thursday or Saturday concert is now available for $89 while a weekly grounds badge and ticket to the Friday concert with The Black Eyed Peas is $109. Benefactor, alumni and clubhouse badges, which include upgraded access to the golf tournament as well as tickets to all three concerts are also available.
