If you haven't visited our Equestrian Stables lately...you may not know that we have added another 'field of greens'!

You may already be familiar with our Summit Garden, but if you have not visited our Equestrian Stables lately…you may not know that we have added another ‘field of greens’! This particular garden is actually our third one on property at The Greenbrier Sporting Club. In addition to this new one and the Summit garden…we also have a small garden located next to the main Lodge.

The culinary, equestrian and maintenance teams, along with the help of Dave Burhman (our local astronomer), all pitched in to create the new Stable Garden. It is providing both restaurants at The Lodge and The Summit Lodge with fresh, locally grown vegetables. While it will not produce enough to completely satisfy our needs for the year, it will add an extra value to the food that we produce.

Having the ability to label the menus at our Clubs with such terms as Lodge Garden, Summit Garden or Stable Garden gives our servers and chefs a sense of pride when offering & creating meals for our members with locally grown produce. Our members and guests can take comfort in knowing that we are going the extra mile to deliver them the best dining experience possible and ensure that each plate served has the freshest product available.

Current items in the Stable Garden include: Turnips, Swiss Chard, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Purple Scallions, Red Cipollini Onions, Russian Kale, Kohlrabi, Baby Beets, Mixed Lettuce, Bok Choy, Sugar Snap Peas, Eggplant, Squash, Zucchini and a variety of tomatoes.

When you’re in next time, stop by our Equestrian Stables, as well as The Summit Lodge and The Main Lodge to see how our gardens are growing. Don’t miss the Lodge Garden; its located right off from the Lodge headed towards the Sports Complex. The Lodge Garden has mainly baby lettuces, with a small variety of other veggies. The baby lettuces flourish here and look wonderful! We have been using them for a while and have reduced our need to buy from an outside source for 2-3 months now.

We know that growing & buying produce locally is a way to cut our carbon footprint, support our local communities and most of all feel good in knowing that our members are getting the best possible service each and every time they step in for a delicious meal!

The race that lasted only a few minutes definitely made a memorable mark on The Greenbrier Sporting Club this May!

This was the first year we celebrated the Kentucky Derby in true Derby Style. The Lodge Lounge was the scene for the race. Ladies and gentlemen showed up in their fine derby elegance with even a few ladies showing off their lovely hats!

What a fun time to be in the Club’s Lounge as everyone watched Mine That Bird come from the pack and win this year’s “Run for the Roses”!

We hope to see you at next year’s party.

The Greenbrier Sporting Club was proud to be a part at the 74th Running of the Montpelier Hunt Races located at James and Dolley Madison’s home in Orange, Virginia. We gathered at the Friday Night Paddock Party where approximately 100 attendees perused the auctions items, which included a mountain getaway to experience The Greenbrier Sporting Club.

Then we were off at the races where we met up with fellow Greenbrier Sporting Club Members and long-time Montpelier Hunt Race viewers, Dr. and Mrs. Douglas Brown and friends. Torn between the day’s UVA game and the races…the Browns showed their support by sporting a UVA flag. Although UVA lost that day, we all won with spectacular weather, wonderful conversation and great horse racing.

We also discovered a recently restored Montpelier, the mansion of James and Dolly Madison.

If you happened to not be at the Club over Labor Day Weekend, we certainly did miss you. We had lots of events across the board and FUN was had by all!

EQUESTRIAN STYLE:
On Saturday we welcomed author Vicky Moon during her Equestrian Style book-signing event at the Sporting Club Equestrian Center. Music was provided by our own Terrence Zimmerman and his father which provided a nice ambience as members and guests met Vicky, had their books signed, browsed Old White Interiors version of equestrian-styled décor and tasted delectable cookies…some of which were too pretty to eat. Amy Mills, our beloved pastry chef once again outdid herself and created an assortment of horse, hat and boot cookies…they were the hit of the day.

PUTTING & CHIPPING GOLF COMPETITION:
On Sunday we had a great time putting & chipping around The Snead as Golf Professional Robbie Gilmore and Assistant Golf Professional Mike Ricci presided over the friendly competition. Thirty-six members & guests of all ages enjoyed hitting it up, down and all-around the course on such shots as the Phil Mickelson “Flop Shot” or the “Texas Wedge”.
With spring just around the corner, it’s time to get out, get some fresh air and get on a horse. In case you didn’t know, our view of the world is much better seen between the ears of a horse! We at the Sporting Club stable truly believe that, and would love the opportunity to show you just how easy life’s trials and tribulations can be after a horse ride.

The Greenbrier Sporting Club stable has lots of options to make your time on a horse a truly memorable experience. From someone who has never ridden to experienced riders, your riding experience will be individually tailored to your interests and skill level. We want everyone to have a fun time on our horses and learn what amazing animals they are.

Why not take a trail ride through the forest or up Kate’s Mountain? We offer a basic one-hour trail ride, but also offer rides of varying lengths depending on your schedule. Whether riding in an English or western saddle, we have the horse for you. We also give lessons in English or western riding, during which we spend time helping you to understand what makes horses tick and how to communicate to them.

Kids (and adults too!) will enjoy our gymkhanas, or games on horses, where they can, among other things, test their abilities at carrying an egg on a spoon while on horseback. Our games are a lot of fun and are designed to increase a person’s abilities and confidence on a horse in an encouraging environment. This year we are also offering a junior wrangler program, where kids will spend time learning about different horse breeds, learning how to take care of a horse and learning how to ride. We also offer pony parties at the stable, suitable for birthdays or any special occasion. Our parties can include birthday cakes or lunch as well.

There is plenty to do at the Sporting Club stable, and we’ll work hard to give you a personal, fun day with our horses.
