Casino Opening, Parade, Fireworks and so much more. Click for story and LOTS of pictures!

The opening of the Casino Club at The Greenbrier was an unforgettable moment in the resort’s history. By 4:30 in the afternoon, guests of the opening event were standing at the front of the hotel, dressed in stunning ball gowns and black tuxedos, along with photographers anxiously awaiting the celebrities’ arrival. Antique cars dropped each celebrity off at the freshly planted main entrance as the stars walked down the red carpet and entered the hotel. After the celebrity arrival, guests were served a five-star dinner wine pairing. After dinner, Lionel Ritchie performed an intimate performance, where guests could dance and sing along to their favorite hits. Even Brooke Shields got in on the fun, joining Lionel Ritchie on stage.

After the performance, everyone was handed a glass of champagne as they toasted the ribbon cutting with Jim Justice, along with celebrity guests, state luminaries and The Sporting Club’s own John Klemish. Guests filled the 103,000-square foot, elegantly designed casino, eager to start playing their favorite games. The roulette, blackjack, baccarat, craps, three-card poker and Texas Hold ‘em tables were all filled within minutes of the opening. Some guests found themselves stationed at the slot machines while others enjoyed a drink or bite to eat at the restaurants within the casino, including In-Fusion, an Asian sushi bar also featuring Pacific Rim cuisine – and Twelve Oaks, an equestrian-themed, high-end lounge.

Guests may now stroll down “Greenbrier Avenue,” the mezzanine level, for an exclusive shopping experience. This level is filled with chic boutiques featuring designers such as St. John, Badgley Mischka, Diane von Furstenburg, Milly and Judith Lieber, Robert Graham, Brioni, Robert Talbott, and Brunello Cuccinelli.

During the evening, attention was called to a springhouse replica in the middle of the casino. All play stopped and the Belles and Gentlemen performed “The Greenbrier Waltz.” Another champagne toast followed the waltz, marking the beginning of a new Greenbrier tradition.

The opening of the Casino Club signaled the beginning of a new era for The Greenbrier. And the fun did not stop there.

The Casino opening kicked off what was one of the busiest weekends the resort has seen in years, with a spectacular 4th of July parade through downtown White Sulphur Springs and culminating on the grounds of the resort. Also during the weekend was the ribbon cutting of Café Carleton, which overlooks the casino, the cutting of a remarkable springhouse cake created by The Sporting Club’s Executive Pastry Chef Amy Mills, a Lilly Pulitzer fashion show, and the magnificent firework show over the golf course.

To be sure, the weekend provided many memorable moments for Greenbrier guests and Sporting Club members!
For a peek into what's in store, Click to learn more.

PGA week promises to bring a lot of excitement to The Greenbrier Sporting Club in terms of golf, but our entertainment and food events might be just as exhilarating. Each night of the The Greenbrier Classic, The Summit will play host to a local musical group while the greatest buffet spread on property is enjoyed by our members. Join us from 6-9:30pm every evening for favorites such as crab cakes, baby back ribs, heirloom tomato platters, fried chicken and smoke pork loin, plus much, much more. Rock out at The Event Glade to the tunes of some of the region’s finest musicians, and eclectic mix of jazz, country, blues, and rock and roll, including the below artists:

Jarmovers – July 28, The Summit
The Jarmovers hail from Lewisburg, WV and entertain audiences with a variety of sophisticated blues, alt-country, and straight-forward rock tunes. Armed with a catalog that ranges from obscure Bob Dylan songs to Muddy Waters, as well as underground new comers like Ryan Bingham, the band enjoys re-working many arrangements to popular songs, tailoring them to the band’s own high-energy style. Playing both acoustically and electrically, The Jarmovers create a dynamic sound that is not to be missed. The band features Dr. Bill Clapham on piano, Josh Baldwin and Johnny Foster on Guitars, Dan Freeman on Bass, and Butch White on drums.

The Wild Rumpus – July 29, The Summit
Hailing from Fayetteville, WV, The Wild Rumpus is an original sting band led by singer and songwriter Andrew Adkins. Forging a sound with one foot stopming in the past and the other stomping in the present, the bands rolls together bluegrass, swing, country and rock & roll, for a style that is uniquely their own.

Jim Snyder- July 30, The Summit
Jim Snyder and The Castaways performance features their extensive repertoire of the music of Jimmy Buffet and many others. They deliver with a tropical flair and a style uniquely their own. Enjoy a change in latitude at The Greenbrier’s own version of Margaritaville, playing some of Bard Buffet’s crowd favorites and much more, too.

Evolver – July 28, 29 & 31, The Lodge
Evolver, formed in 2006, is a musical collective made up of Saxophonist Birch Graves, Brian Carr on trombone and a rhythmic section composed of WSS resiedents Matthew Patterson on bass and Joshua Adamo on drums. Lending luscious vocals Diane Proud. The band performs instrumental soundscapes. Inspired by a multitude of musical stylings – world, jazz, electronica, and funk – Evolver successfully fuses these styles with their own creative personalities. Always trying to discover new sounds and rhythms, Evolver pulls musicians in from near and far to help inspire their musical quest. Each show is unique and full of passion.

Jim Waive & the Young Divorcees – July 31, The Summit
Jim Waive combines his no-pick, percussive style on guitar with some of the most compelling lyrics in honky tonk. His smoky voice delivers songs laden with fervor and heart. You can catch a glimpse of his Tidewater roots in the fire and brimstone melodies. This band is a true country band that supports one another like a family should (without the dysfunction). Their beauty is subtle and very real. All four are good musicians who carry on the American tradition of honky tonkin’, beer drinkin’, heart breakin’ music with a down-home authenticity.

Jennifer Kirkland – August 1, The Summit
Imagine blending the best of the sounds of Julie London, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, and Norah Jones. That’s how Jennifer Kirkland’s voice has been described by one listener. A graduate of the Indiana University School of Music, Jennifer has been performing professionally as a vocalist and keyboard player in a variety of settings and styles since the late 1970s. Since 2002, Jennifer has turned her focus back to performing jazz, pop, and blues vocals. In 2004, she released her first jazz CD, You Must Believe in Spring.

It’s right around the corner and you can almost smell the barbeque grills firing up for this upcoming Independence Day weekend. From July 1st to July 5th, The Greenbrier Sporting Club will be hosting activities to celebrate the 234th birthday of The United States of America. (Trivia: This year also marks the 50th Anniversary of the 50-star flag.) Whether golf and tennis is on your mind, simply relaxing by the pool, or say, even a grand red carpet event with celebrities, we’ve got a little something for everyone.

Friday, July 2nd, begins with some Ashtanga Yoga and moves on to tennis, golf, a scenic run, real estate tour, and ending with the Grand Opening of The Greenbrier Casino Club, a gala that will feature a five-star gourmet dinner, $300 in match play per person, and an intimate performance by Lionel Richie. Celebrities from around the country will be in attendance, including Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck, Jane Seymour, Shaq, and Jack Nicklaus. For more information on The Casino Club, CLICK HERE.

Saturday includes a golf demo outing, Kids Movement at The Activity Barn, a culinary demo and float decorating. The big day – July 4th – starts out with a yoga fit class and is full of activities until the Annual July 4th Picnic on The Lodge Event Lawn, (Adults $65 / Children $35) with live music and a magician for entertainment, as well as the rubber ducky race. An after party will take things up to The Summit for S’Mores and an electrifying view of The Greenbrier’s Fireworks Display.

This Saturday, June 5th, is the season’s first Summer Concert Series and will feature Wild Rumpus, a collaboration of local Greenbrier County musicians who have made a big name for themselves while touring the east coast. “Mix the downhome lyrical stylings of Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, and Guy Clark, spice it up with some Uncle Tupelo and you’ve got The Wild Rumpus,” according to the band’s website. “Singer/songwriter, Andrew Adkins, tells his tales with deep-lunged gusto while backed by Charlie Garvin’s pseudo-bluegrass guitar, Allan Sizemore’s Carolina inspired banjo, and Dr. Sneed’s rock-a-billy bass. The whole album has a bouncy, almost live feel about it.”

Check The Wild Rumpus out at http://thewildrumpus.com

The Summer Concert Series will be held at The Summit and feature a buffet dinner from 6:30 – 8:30p.m., while the band will play until around 10:00p.m. Complimentary popcorn and S’mores over the fire pit will round out what’s sure to be a great evening. We hope you join us!
Memorial Day, for many of us here in West Virginia, is the day our grandmothers told us was the weekend to plant our summer flowers and vegetables. It’s also a weekend we all know to be filled with friends, family, and food, as we celebrate those who have served our nation bravely. This year, The Greenbrier Sporting Club features four days full of fun for the whole family. From tennis clinics to culinary demonstrations, The Sporting Club is offering its members a little bit of everything…for everyone, with children’s culinary demos and “Critter Care” at The Equestrian Stables.

Dinner service will be served a la carte at both The Members’ Lodge and The Summit on Friday and Saturday at 6:30p.m. Additionally, a Memorial Picnic will take place on Sunday from 5-7:30p.m. at The Lodge Event Lawn and Pool Deck.

The Summit Restaurant Opens this Thursday, April 27th, with New and Exciting Menu Items, as well as some Old Favorites. Click to Read More.

The redbuds are in full bloom, the resort’s entrance is blanketed in brilliant tulips, and everyone’s favorite mountaintop restaurant is about to open for the season. This Thursday – April 27th – The Summit will open its doors for the 2010 season.

This year, Summit Chef Hannah Reid and Sous Chef Andrew Robinson are upping the ante with some new menu items such as Elysian Fields Lamb Duo and a hot crab and crawfish dip.

“We’re trying to go upscale southern cuisine,” says Reid “while involving as many local and seasonal ingredients as possible. We want to bring flavors from our pasts back to the table.”

The Summit, which has always been a purveyor of local produce, meats, poultry, and fish, has also gotten their organic garden started. Most spring plants are sown, such as lettuces, greens, and beans.

“Eating fresh produce has a gigantic impact on flavor,” explains Robinson, a Lewisburg native. “We try to cook them as naturally and traditionally as possible, to ensure the highest in nutrition and the impact of the flavor. I can harvest squash at noon and have it in a soup that evening. You can’t get any fresher than that.”

While The Summit is looking forward to getting feedback on their new menu items, they assure everyone that favorites such as Fried Chicken are not going anywhere.

The Summit is beginning a Happy Hour on Sundays from 4 – 6 p.m., with specials on handcrafted beers and appetizers.

This Father’s Day The Summit also plays host to a Father’s Day BBQ, with culinary demonstrations and beer tastings.
